JOT TOTE

Industrial Design
Purposeful
Jot Tote is a case designed to make all of our Jots available when inspiration strikes. We hear over and over again that customers are losing their styluses in backpacks, purses, and on messy studio desks. It's our job to eliminate any barriers between having inspiration and capturing it on the iPad. Our designers did a great job building a solution that is bold, passionate, and purposeful.
High Touch
The stylus drawer is the functionality that makes Jot Tote different from other cases, and we wanted to make it the primary focus of the design. We explored hundreds of different materials, patterns, and colors. We settled on tinted gun metal paint on steel with a matte UV coat to protect against finger prints. The added etched geometric pattern matches our structured aesthetic and offers a texture that feels nice to touch.
Zero Bulk
The iPad is slim, sleek, and mobile. We weren't going to diminish those reasons for loving your iPad. The stylus drawer offered a simple and elegant solution for the slimmest profile. When carrying Jot, your iPad needs to slide nicely into your bag with no snags.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
We Are Not Case Makers
We didn't set out to design a case, but through the design process, a case gave us the best customer experience for making your stylus available when you needed it. We explored smart covers, stylus holders that clipped on to the iPad, and even a simple clip on the cap.
Great Idea, Terrible Experience
One of our concepts bubbled to the top and seemed like a brilliant solution to all our problems. It used spring steel that would bend to accept the stylus. Since it is spring steel, when the stylus wasn't there, it would lay flat up against the iPad. This solution needed no mechanism, which for us pointed to fewer failure points for production and durability. Unfortunately our hearts were broken when we shared it with customers. They gave us overwhelming feedback that they were scared of bending the steel because it may break. Back to the drawing board we went.
Prototypes On Top Of Prototypes
We had countless solutions to validate, and creating prototypes allowed us to test each one. As the engineering progressed, it informed the design. In a parallel path we explored hundreds of materials and finishes. In the end parallel design paths and the influence they had on each other produced the simplest and most impactful solution posssible.
The Drawer
Our refinement and user testing lead us to the perfect balance. We moved away from the basic spring steel band to a sliding drawer; the drawer could hold the Jot and not add any additional bulk. The mechanics went through a lot of development to get to the final design, but we still started with handmade parts to quickly validate our idea.

Adonit Form Language
Jot Tote needed to play well with the iPad's design language, but it also needed to express our brand values. The mechanism for the stylus drawer added some thickness to the case and we used that as a chance to create a crisp clean line at the edge. We coupled that with angled lines to give it a more bold approach.
