Gregory Blackburn has focused his career upon architecture in the campus environment, working with colleges and universities throughout California, the United States and in England.

Greg leads HED's Higher Education Design Studio in San Francisco, California. Prior to joining HED's practice in 2014, we was a Principal with Anshen+Allen in San Francisco for 16-years, where he led their Academic Design Group, focusing upon architecture for Colleges and Universities. Prior to this, Greg led Higher Education projects for an additional 10-years in Anshen+Allen's Los Angeles office.

He has led the design of 33 projects on 24 campuses, including five campuses of the University of California. His projects have included 15 life science / bio-medical research buildings and 8 engineering / advanced technology research buildings.

Greg's work, mostly for publicly funded institutions, has received 23 design awards including a National AIA Honor Award for Design, and 9 other national, regional and local AIA awards. His work has been featured in national and international publications including Architecture, l’Arca, Architectural Record, Urban Land, Contract, arcCA , R&D and World Architecture.

He is an active participant with the Society for College and University Planning, and has spoken extensively at a wide range of regional, national and international professional conferences. He has served on three occasions as a panelist and design review board member for the National Institutes of Health, and has twice been honored as the Executive-in-Residence at the College of Human & Environmental Sciences of the University of Missouri.

Greg was educated at the University of California, Berkeley, College of Environmental Design, graduating in 1979. In 2012, he was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects, in recognition of his notable contributions to the advancement of the profession of architecture.

He is a leader in the evolution of engineering and life science research and instructional facilities, creating buildings that contribute indelibly to the campus communities in which they exist. Read Less
