Serving programs in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Physics and Materials Science, the 164,500 GSF Bourns Hall Engineering Science Building comprises a multi-disciplinary research and instructional complex, establishing a new College of Engineering at the UC Riverside campus. Separate buildings house the research laboratories apart from the offices and classrooms, creating a series of central open-air courtyards which form the social heart of this new College community. By separating programmatic elements into discrete structures, the building systems supporting these environments could be more appropriately defined, affording significant energy savings. As curriculum for the new College was being developed coincident with the building design, the laboratory building was designed to be easily adaptable to an unknown future and extendable through future phases of development. Offices for the programs were purposely mixed to promote interaction and collegiality. A wide range of student learning spaces are provided, including spaces for student organizations, learning resources and tutoring. Particular attention was placed upon providing universal accessibility throughout the complex, which received special recognition by the State of California.
