Godsell Construction's profile

Hospital Renovation to the Health Outcomes of Patients

A construction company founded by Arthur Godsell in Long Island, New York, Godsell Construction provides construction and renovation services in the New York metropolitan area. In 2013, when the demand for construction services had gone soft, Godsell Construction began specializing in hospital renovations and since then had been performed major renovations in many healthcare facilities in New York.

Traditionally, there are three key determinants to the outcome of health interventions: experience, cost, and results. However, a new determinant is emerging that has a significant impact on health outcomes. Technical termed as “social design,” it appeared that the building and its spaces where the patients received treatment have much to do with health outcomes.

Social design is used now by health care organizations and architects to develop alternative ideas and strategies according to the specific needs of users or in this case, treatment. The role of the building undergoes reimagining to be able to contribute towards the achievement of such goals.

In 2015, a collaborative study between Dr. Neel Shah, an obstetrics-gynecology assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, and Mass Design Group, a non-profit architectural firm, was conducted to find out how architectural design is related with the healthcare outcomes of patients. The study was limited to the incidence of Cesarean deliveries in the US. Twelve delivery facilities were enrolled in the study. It was found out that hospitals with relatively fewer labor rooms had more Cesarean deliveries compared with hospitals with relatively more operating rooms.
