Drywall, despite its name, does not constitute the supporting structure of the wall itself. Instead, it acts a wall covering that’s screwed into the “studs,” boards or in some cases sheet metal, that provide the framing for the walls. The material can be purchased in panels of varying thicknesses usually measuring 4-feet wide and 8-feet long.

To manufacture drywall, most producers rely on one key material: gypsum, a soft grayish white mineral. It’s ideal because it’s cheap, does not catch fire, and has attractive soundproofing attributes. Drywall is typically from 70 to 90 percent gypsum, with the remaining 10 to 30 percent percent usually comprising fiberglass and cellulose.

The global gypsum board marketplace, driven by demand for residential and commercial real estate, was worth more than $37 billion in 2018 and is projected to achieve a compound annual growth rate of more than 11 percent through 2025.
