While growing up we watched the Harry Potter movies every year. My family loves them, and so does my stepfather.
For his birthday last year I made a drawing of the family in Harry Potter style.

I often start by sketching the positions where everyone will be standing. I do this to prevent someone from being out of the picture.
I also make sure that there is a difference in heights, so not all the tall members on the left and the little ones on the right.
