The Great Dictator—Movie poster

For this project, I created a poster for the 20th century movie titled “The Great Dictator” by Charlie Chaplin. The process of creating the poster involved several analogue procedures and experiments that resulted in unique, unexpected compositions. When designing the poster, satire was one of the main elements that I focused on, since the movie focuses a lot on criticizing the corruption in a humorous manner. Furthermore, in the movie, Chaplin plays two confrontational characters: the ruthless dictator and the poor barber. Thus, the poster visualizes these two different characters.

The final result was intended to be a series of several posters that include both characters. However, due to time limitations, I only produced a diptych. The different posters are meant to see separately, where the subject (the barber brush) is unchanged, but in each poster, different factors are dominating it. The brush
in this sense refers back to the poor barber, and the other elements such a the barbed wire and the smoke, refer to the dictator and his oppressive regime and war, respectively.
