Mumbai International Airport, Wayfinding System

Mumbai International & Domestic Airport
The Chatrapati Shivaji International and Domestic Airport terminal spanning over an area of (1A) area 200,000 sq. ft. and (2B & 2C) area 900,000 sq. ft. was one of the most exciting projects, allowing an appreciation of visual identity in Indian public environments.

When designing the signage, Information classification was planned as per traveler’s behavior, visual environment and architecture. Colors were selected, a combination of modern, innovative grey for utilities and vibrant blue for passenger flow keeping in mind the space and background, the amount of daylight let in the building, the lighting to ensure good readability, legibility and visibility of the signage

Directional Signage Boards were standardized in different categories and communication informative posters represented pictorially, using open English & Devnagari typefaces helping legibility. Along the lines of international guidelines, few pictograms were edited to suit the Indian needs and requirements. With an emphasis to be energy efficient due to abundance of natural light, non backlit signage structure and unit system was developed enabling low maintenance and quick installation for complete clarity.
An indepth study of passenger travelling behavior.
Plotting of signs on the map at Arrival Level as per recommended visibility and legibility. Signs are positioned parallel or perpendicular to the wall and corresponding information is then plotted accordingly in the Content document.
According to classification of information, Directional and Utility signs are explored to design the graphic hierarchy. Primary information is displayed on blue panels and secondary information on grey panels, with an emphasis on arrow, pictograms and text information.
The WHITNEY typeface is selected for the English language complimenting DV NID Bold for Hindi, India's national language. A standard system defining the ratio of English and Hindi type size is developed setting the visual hierarchy by giving prime importance to the English language.
The pictograms are designed according to the standards of DOT, consisting of a white figure on dark background, allowing a good legibility against the dark background field colour of Blue and Black. However in reference to the Indian context, a few pictograms have been modified to suit the Indian audience.
