The assignment was to develop a series of four poster calendars utilizing each of the four type/image relationships; Separation, Fragmentation, Fusion, and Inversion. This is my Inversion example and my development sketches.
Inversion is described as "a specific category of fusion, in which type and image fuse by exchanging roles. As with fusion, the relationship that takes place in inversion is similar to a chemical reaction with two substances bonding together. When type is portrayed as part of an image, or when an image is built from type, it captures the imagination and transports the viewer beyond the potential communicative properties of type or image alone and into an elevated sense of discovery."

Final version.
I used embroidery thread to create the art in the lower right and the band title. The thread was placed on top of black foam core and then photographed in natural sunlight to capture the shadows. The tour dates/venues were added digitally.
