Retro Amy Grant DVD Menu UI
I wanted to see if I could create my own personal DVD complete with assets I had encoded off of old VHS tapes I owned and a navigation menu UI I created myself in Adobe Photoshop. Using a copy of Apple’s DVD Studio Pro, I had managed to incorporate the navigation UI and used masks for highlighting each menu item as the remote was used to step through each one.
The first screen is ‘Classic Amy’ with music videos from the 1980s. The second screen is ‘Modern Amy’ from the 1990s forward. Each menu thumbnail is from a select screenshot. The ‘halo’ highlight was created in Photoshop and colorized in DVD Studio Pro.
I think it’s a shame that the period for digital navigation menus like the ones found on DVDs and CD-ROMs was so short. The canvas for these UIs was so open to creativity and pushing the envelope for what an onscreen experience could look like.
