Dungeons & Dragons Inspired Illustrations

Personal Project

Illustration & Logo Design

I love to play Dungeons & Dragons. The inspiration for this project was to create a vector graphic of any description for each of the playable characters in the campaign, as well as a graphic for the campaign itself for the dungeon master as well.
Tiamat

Tiamat is a five headed dragon and represents the antagonists in the campaign. My goals for the image was radial symmetry, strong design and a medieval art feel.
The DM

This image was heavily inspired by the official artwork for Matt Mercer, from Critical Role. Matt Mercer is a hero to my DM, so I thought it was appropriate to reference it. I used my DM's face as a reference for the facial features and I discussed with him what colour he would hypothetically have for a concealing hooded robe.
Lazerous

Lazerous is an entity made from metal and organic material. Lazerous follows a god who is represented by a cog. Lazerous has existed in a clock tower for many centuaries. Naturally, a cog would fit the character very well.
Rodda

Rodda, a monk, is another character who is tied to a god. One of the symbols for the god is a spider. The design uses the willow leaf as there is a tie to the Shaolin monks. Therefore, the design is symmetrical like a mandala, utilising the number eight with the shape of a willow leaf. The base colour scheme is red and green, as these colours are important to Rodda. I found it interesting adjusting opacity settings for each layer to create different effects.
Gwendelyn

Gwendelyn's design was originally planned to be minimalist, like Claudius'. Gwendelyn is a forest gnome wizard who has an owl as a friend. I was keen on including a forest, fire, Gwendelyn and an owl as elements of the design. Gwendelyn's player told me that the trees she envisioned were old and gnarly. It was challenge to illustrate gnarly woodland in a minimalist way. After trying many approaches, I resorted to sketching a tree freehand and using the drawing to form the composition. This meant that the design could now be more complex and rustic. My favorurite part of creating this illustration was the bonfire. I overlay mutliple roughly drawn shapes upon each other, with varying opacity settings. I carved into the form to sculpt the flames.
Fredrick

Fredrick is a Divination Wizard who has a taste for the fine things in life, but is always chasing the coin to do so. The themes I included were: class, his colour pallet (blue and cream), a dagger and games of chance.
