THE BEGINNING · STEP BY STEP
初 • 步伐字型

Tsubaki’s third set of simplified Chinese font design, named as “The Beginning · Step by Step”, is inspired by the Chinese idiom “脚踏实地”, or when translated - keep your feet on the ground. The characters are comprised of thin, long rectangles stacked upon each other based on the stroke order, with each length of the rectangles not entirely the same. This is to create a unique sense of design.

Chinese characters trace back the long history of the Chinese culture, reflecting its development, spread, and influence. Despite their complexity, Chinese characters are a fascinating product of human ingenuity and artistry. They are constructed stroke by stroke according to its very own order, each stroke combined together to carry a beautiful meaning. The construction of Chinese characters reminded designer Jay Lim of the idiom mentioned earlier. “The Beginning · Step by Step” was created in hopes of inspiring people to walk their life step by step, keeping their feet grounded and taking no shortcuts - just as how Chinese characters were created. Life, in all its complexity, teaches us lessons and show us its beauty if only we are willing to slow down our steps to notice them, even in the midst of flawed moments. The bolt-upright typeface portrays the origin and rawness of life.

“The Beginning · Step by Step” is widely used on poster designs, especially for the performing arts. The honed and crafted typeface gives off great aesthetic pleasure and effortless beauty. The typeface is even used by Malaysia’s fashion master - Eric Choong, as the official typeface for his 30th-anniversary exhibition. The exhibition talks about the roots of the fashion designer and there’s no other typeface that quite suits this theme except for “The Beginning · Step by Step”.
