Project FIT: Environmental Art Unit
These are the original painting of the samples made to introduce the environmental unit to students in grades 10-12.
Project: Each year Forestry Institute for Teachers (FIT) accepts applications from teachers interested in adding environmental science to their curriculum during a week long hands on professional development educational experience. The demographics range from K-12 grades teachers, administrators, and individuals working with children through non-profit organizations. Predominately the teachers specialize in areas where this type of science is easily connected to their core subjects.
FIT Director Response to Unit Artifacts:  "Just returned from a break so sorry for the delay, but what a wonderful project to read to get me back into work mode!  I was completely fascinated by your student samples as they addressed their own fears and the reactions they received to the random acts of kindness/recognition - I wish there was some way of getting everyone in the country to try your lesson!!

On behalf of the FIT staff, I thank you so much for all your time and effort you put into working with our program over the past year." Brian Brown on March 21, 2019
Project Fit for Art: Because the program is science based the problem statement for this project was "How can an art teacher connect the principals learned through FIT to meet Common Core, State, and Local teaching standards within the content area of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) while educating students about environmental conservation, responsibility, fostering English Language Arts, and building social skills?"
Design Solution: During the program images, note, and data collection led to the skeleton of a unit centered around students using found objects in the environment as an element in a student-driven project that would be given to others at the conclusion of the project. This portfolio highlights the process of creating and executing the unit. It contains images of the original samples made to introduce the project to students, the written environmental project unit, and 4 completed student samples.
Environmental Art Unit: This is the complete unit written and formatted to share with FIT and other teachers.
Student Samples: The samples represent a range of media, language art skills, and grade level. The samples include the written component to the unit and student taken images of their completed work.
Project Reflection: This image is from the completed .PDF package submitted to FIT
