60th Anniversary of the moon watch:

George Clooney meets his childhood hero: Astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

The Idea

The 60th anniversary of the Speedmaster "moon" watch brought about a lot of excitement for the project and OMEGA wanted to celebrate in a big way. Our idea was to have two of their biggest-name brand ambassadors meet for the first time: Apollo 11 astronaut buzz Aldrin and self-proclaimed space fan-boy, George Clooney.

Bringing the two worlds of cinema and science together, we created a situation for Buzz to  take George through the history of the program - in his own words. Like a director's commentary, the filming was non-scripted and the two men expressed their own thoughts.

Designed by Alpha team, was used on a wide range of applications throughout the campaign. It appeared on everything from the film, TV commercial, print work, event invites and in-store promotional items.

The Event

After our shoot, both George and Buzz went onto further celebrations. With celebrities such as actress Liv Tyler and physicist Brian Cox in attendance, this grand event held at the Tate Modern in London took over the turbine hall and transformed it into a night truly amongst stars.

George tells a story of being a 9 year old boy during the time of the Apollo program. Like most other children of the time, he obsessed over the astronauts' every move.

We treated this occasion as a historical moment and aimed to capture their first meeting for real on camera. George waited patiently in the cinema lobby for Buzz to arrive and it was clear from the start that both men were pleased to meet each other. As a whole, it turned out to be an honest and meaningful experience for all involved.

We dressed the cinema in a space theme, providing branded popcorn tubs and poster frames with original NASA images.

Seen below is a vintage Speedmaster, made in 1967, taken from OMEGA's museum.
