According to estimates by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) more than 6.4 million tons of plastic waste reaches every year the oceans. The ocean currents carry the trash in five large patches, far away from civilization or governmental responsibilities. The greatest of these patches is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the North Pacific.
