This video-installation, shown in Lugar a Dudas, in Cali, was a result of the 2018 Independent Study Program called The Uncertain School. The theme of this year’s edition was ‘Occultures’, focusing on the occult in contemporary cultural practices. The installation is a pile of five differently coloured bean bags. Between the top two, a phone is wedged in and plays a video on a loop. The installation attempts to conceptualise negative space – or the void. Since bean bags are imperfect spheres, it is their incompleteness that allows them to be stacked. In the video, the banal is what exists as negative space in the mind: the video shows how acts of time-wasting aid the construction of meaning. It refers to specific experiences in the program that were at the sidelines of the academic content: footage of games played on people's phones, of a tutor's pet, a chroma key applied to a tutor's bright green shirt. The video mixes this lo-fi footage with lo-fi digital montage to generate a narrative, in which this banality is seen as mystical.
