Marou for the Nobel Prize

Graphic Design
Rice had the rare and incredible honor of creating work for the Nobel Prize dinner in 2018. The opportunity fell from the stars, when we were commissioned to create for Gérard Mourou, winner of the 2018 prize in physics, a one-off design for a MAROU chocolate bar, that included his favorite snacks; pistachios and dried apricots. The recipe is a nod to the ‘brain food’ that powered the scientist through decades of research. The ingredients, Initialed, C,P, and A; allude to Gérard’s master work, “the Chirped Pulse Amplification.”

The outside of the package utilizes the Nobel Prize typeface and identity. It is purposefully sober and sophisticated, and conceals a hidden blast of celebration. On the interior, rainbow foil stamped triangles reference the spectrums from Gérard’s groundbreaking work with lasers. The chocolate bar itself is wrapped again in a careful reproduction of Gérard’s actual prize-winning paper. In the spirit of fun, Rice got to work replacing technical words in that document with the word ‘chocolate', transforming it into chocolate-science non-sense.
