JCCC 50th Anniversary

Johnson County Community College is celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2019. As part of the honors independent study program, I was selected with two other students to work on monuments with a history of the college written by the history department. Through these concepts, we have designed 3 installments that will be unveiled in spring of 2019.

The inspiration behind these limestone pillars are the Kansas fence posts that so many see as part of the landscape of Kansas. Because of their integrity, I decided to go with a limestone veneer that's structurally sound by the cinder block core.
There will be a steel piece that has the illusion of "slicing" the limestone. At a 45 degree angle, everyone will be able to read the information from the plaques. The pillars will stand 4 feet tall and be light in color which will compliment the buildings around it.
The layout will stand off the steel with acrylic. The colors of the college will be used in all the installments and this example shows a rectangle of color of the left side. It's reminiscent of a bookmark; marking a place in the college's history.
