Geiger edizioni

Geiger Edizioni is a research on Geiger publishing house which acted between Turin and Mulino di Mazzano in the 60’s - 80’s. In the literary context of the Neoavanguardia when many publishers try to deal with the artistic and poetic experimentation, Geiger presents itself as an extremely special case because not only the content is experimental but also the form. In fact, the production is extremely varied not only as a literary proposal but above all in the form of the book object: numerous types of format, even extremely bizarre, use of frequent paper changes and manual interventions characteristic of an almost homemade production.
The project was born thanks to Maurizio, Tiziano and Adriano Spatola, this one well-known artist active in the Neoavanguardia who had already collaborated with several independent and not magazines as Quindici and Il Verri.
During a memorable night the three brothers conceived and set in motion the trick that would have produced the first experimental anthology GEIGER (whose name refers to the measuring instrument of radioactive contamination and its intensity), the first of a long series of publications of the homonymous Editions.

“Our experimental anthology, which at the moment none of us thought it could develop with other publications, would be called GEIGER, ticking in the presence of poetic and artistic experiments of all kinds, signaling their presence and value.”

The research starts with an introduction to the panorama of editorial experimentation between the 60’s and the 80’s, focusing on those publications spread by major publishers such as Feltrinelli and Einaudi, and on some more independent projects of small publishing houses such as Lerici, reporting testimonies of those who have been protagonists of this artistic and literary scene.
The most famous collections of Geiger such as Experimental, Poetry, A/Z, Affichès and the Anthologies are then analyzed,  highlighting the characteristics of innovation and avant-garde that only the independence from the publishing market has created and that has distinguished its work from any other type of publication in Italy.
