P4 - Figure/Ground

The objectives of this project were to  explore positive/negative shapes and figure/ground meaning in a composition, become familiar with the visual characteristics that achieve a figure/ground relationships, and analyze the shape components of a common object, studying visual qualities suitable for a figure/ground composition and pattern development. Designs were derived from drawing studies and analysis of shapes directly from a selected object - in this case, hand tools. To see my works in progress and alternative designs, visit my Dropmark

This is the final unit form I derived from a photo of a corkscrew.

A black and white pattern made with my original unit form using glide reflection and inverted colors.

The same pattern as above in color.

My second created pattern using reflection.

My third created pattern using translation and a mixture of colors.

A mock-up of an album cover featuring my design and my not-so-subtle nod to Parks and Recreation.
