City of Darkness is a powerful tragi-comedy presented by Theatre Ash (HK) and David Glass Ensemble (UK). It was based on the concept of a former residence, Cheung Lok-Kan in Kowloon Walled City. Kowloon Walled City architecture and stories have been fascinating the world even after two decades of its demolition.

When Theatre Ash initially approached me to design the posters for this production, they showed me a trailer. I was mesmerised by the imagery shown. I particularly found one poignant image that could be the visual point for the promotional materials. It was a scene where the protagonist appeared trapped between two walls that were closing in into her as she stretched out her hand as a cry for help before being swallowed up.

However, the director’s vision was of a close-up dramatic expression. They sent me a few photos to choose from, and I selected one akin to the expression of Edvard Munch’s The Scream.

Nonetheless, it was not used as they found it too much resembling a horror story.

Back to the drawing board, I went…
I shared my first vision with them for my second attempt at the design. The director agreed this time and sent me a few new photos to choose from. Even though they were not quite the imagery that I envisaged, I managed to choose one that was the closest.
Bellow was the final image and design that they used for their Indonesia runs.
