We were asked to join the Worthwearing project designing a t-shirt for Médecins sans frontières and their #Umani campaign, which feature quotes from italian writers, each one brought to life by an illustrator, calligrapher or comic artist. We were given a quote by noir writer Carlo Lucarelli:
Quando conosci quello che ti faceva paura, quasi sempre ti accorgi che non c'era niente di cui spaventarsi
When you get to know what scares you, you might realize that there was nothing to be afraid of
We thought that showing a laughing kid taking off a big, sinister mask was a good metaphor: a huge mask covered with tribal patterns, symbolizing that different cultures, that may seems threatening or even dangerous to a lot of people in our scared off society, are in the end only human.
