ACOEM Publishes Framework for Evaluating Workers

Based in Dallas, Melissa Tonn is an occupational medicine physician. As part of her professional endeavors, Melissa Tonn is a member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM).

In July, the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, an ACOEM publication, published a framework developed by a panel of experts defining worker wellbeing. The framework sought to provide employers and industry professionals with a definitive explanation of worker wellbeing as well as a system for measuring it with the goal of improving occupational health and safety.

The panel that developed the framework was sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. According to them, wellbeing is a unifying concept that captures multiple factors contributing to overall workers’ health. Its five major domains are:

-Workplace environment and safety structures
-Workplace policies and culture influencing worker wellbeing
-Health status of workers, including physical and mental health
-Work experience, relating to factors such as quality of life
-And external factors affecting workers’ wellbeing such as homes, communities, and societies.
