THRIVE HR/HR Decisions Magazine Illustrations

Cover and feature article illustration for THRIVE HR magazine, a publication by Simplify Compliance. The article discussed changes in overtime laws that were initially going to be implemented in 2018, but because they were later retracted, the article was scratched from the issue.
This illustration was for an article that listed and explained 5 steps to developing company culture and attracting the best candidates.
The whistleblower piece was pretty straightforward as far as imagery goes, but I used bright, vibrant colors with high contrast to invoke a loudness on the page. I also included subtle symbolism ($, §) within the air going through the whistle.
Settling Employee Fights and Disputes. I drew inspiration from old boxing posters and wanted to bring up the often pettiness of fights within the workplace, so I used the children's toy "Rock 'em Sock 'em" robots as another source of inspiration and placed them in suits.
This feature article discussed the importance but surprising lack of succession planning within businesses. My illustration indicates that it should be a careful and intentional process that includes looking further ahead and using multiple hands to craft the perfect candidate.
This article was about dealing with toxic employees within the workplace. I was inspired by old horror movie posters and box art with giant creatures attacking through the streets, but instead of streets, the attacker and victims are running through a series of cubicles.
This work was for employee development. I used the model kit piece to convey the hands-on approach necessary from higher-ups.
This illustration was tricky because initially when I thought "hate," I thought of anger and frustration. With that in mind I drew up different scenarios of workers destroying equipment in a fit of rage; however, after a bit of brainstorming with the magazine's art director, we settled on hating your job often means you're bored and disconnected.
This article was about measuring employee engagement. The image is pretty direct with a worker starting her day early, two monitors and books indicating how engaged she is with her work.
This feature article discussed the affect of performance appraisals, and how the once a year evaluation isn't as effective as previously thought. I personally find performance appraisals feel like being put under a microscope, and I'm sure many others do as well.
