Buy Nothing Day

is a contribution to the controversy over Black Friday versus Buy Nothing Day and an awareness campaign about the toxic cultural twist pushing people to shop till they drop 1.

Once upon a time there I was in my way trough Viseu when I came upon this empty market. I shot a picture on the spot and when I looked back at it I knew I had to make my contribution to the mouvement initiated by the design collective adbusters in an effort to detox our culture and the way we see things. These toxic effects prevent people from taking a step back before they actually buy something so they do not think if they have a real need for what they’re buying. As a matter of fact they don’t even wander how come they’re feeling that uncontrollable urge to buy «x» or «y» (or x over y)! When they come to think of it, usually the rubbish is done. These toxicity becomes particularly striking and visible on «Black Friday», so no wonder adbusters have chosen the date to commemorate «Buy Nothing Day».

These were the meditations which ended up in this t-shirt which you can buy and wear on «buy nothing day».

You may be asking «how come you’re selling a t shirt to commemorate buy nothing day»? Well that’s the point! Adding to the controversy: causing you to use your brain so your rationality plays along with your «marketing-generated feelings» so you may come upon wise decisions.
You might ask «what’s the big deal if I shop till I drop»? Well let me tell you the shopping frenzy is such that people have died and became seriously injured. Here’s the best part of becoming aware: you don’t need to buy the t-shirt: you can come up with yours! (although by buying it you’ll be supporting an independent designer who deserves to survive as much as big corporations—insofar as we take the free market’s logic literally). In fact, you don’t even need a t shirt at all. As long as you detox your brain, freedom will follow.
