Winship Cancer Institute: publications, ephemera

Winship Cancer Institute
of Emory University
For nearly 10 years, I designed the the flagship publication of The Winship Cancer Institute, along with many other communication materials. I designed and on occasion, illustrated, the publication. Wrote smart-aleck headlines that were adopted by the editor and advised on major marketing efforts. The initial market for the tabloid sized newsletter was split between patients and clinicians. Presented here are covers from the reflect the move to a patient and community focus presented in a magazine format. The magazine format was far more cost effective to produce, but, was too successful and garnered too much attention.
This cover is an illustration that I constructed in Illustrator using scanned bits, handmade papers, and marbles, to represent the respiratory system.
The cover of this issue was a painting of mine which perfectly illustrated the psychological screening initiative to get help for the depression suffered by cancer patients.
This guide to Breast Cancer Survivorship presented a wealth of information to those recovering and living with the outcomes of breast cancer treatment. The information had to be presented in a pleasant manner, clearly illustrated, and, to add an element of difficulty—in Spanish. All with a ridiculously small budget. I negotiated a deal for the printing as well. Though I whined about the amount of money I hemorrhaged in producing this piece, I was reminded of the power of what I do when two friends of mine found pertinent information for their own treatment and survival in the book.
The invitation to the Winship Holiday Celebration and the Winship Cancer Institute Holiday Card were simple but striking type treatments in two colors on Curious Paper: metallic. These won an award for excellence from PIAG
