Preterminal 2 is the second of three different projects done for developer London & Regional Panama on three different sites for a basic, temporary bus station, over the course of three years, in Panamá Pacífico, a major mixed-use development outside Panama City with over 1,400 total hectares and 850 of those for development.
The project was assigned a lot within an office complex just off of one of the development's main roads. The size and geometry in plan were determined by the owner's operational requirements as far as frequencies of trips and bus sizes and types.
Just as in Preterminal 1, the vertical architecture is fundamentally a roof over the passenger platform and the structure to support it.
As such, the roof becomes the most significant architectural element, and we propose to highlight this status by attempting to make it seem like the ONLY architectural element, by covering the metal structure in mirrored glass, virtually effacing its supports. Thusly, our single element hovers in detachment above the commuters.
While the mirrors reflect the natural surrounding landscape and suburban setting, our pragmatically shaped metal roof is nonetheless clad in wooden panels, to lend more tension to the ‘hovering’ idea due to the suggestion of monolithic weight, and also to tie it conceptually to the preserved rain forests around the site.
