Nyoman Oka (Local surfer/vendor): I was the first to see it. It must have [washed ashore] sometime between three and four. It looked dark and massive in the late moonlight. It seemed like something that came out of a show or movie. I thought it was the product of someone’s imagination...
2010’s “Bali Marine Research Center Landscape Competition” organized by Arquitectum© called for the design of a tsunami research center, after the major tsunami that had hit Southeast Asia 6 years earlier. The Center was to be located in the ocean 100 meters off of Kuta Beach, in tourist-packed Kuta, southern Bali, Indonesia. It was to contain research facilities for submarine study, as well as housing and leisure areas for the researchers. It was to include areas to be open to the public for visits and tours. It was to include two pools, one a 200SM seawater pool for researchers’ underwater access, the other a 200SM freshwater pool for the researchers’ leisure. Separate circulations for the tourists and the researchers were to be provided, however the tourists’ circulation was to run adjacent to the research spaces so that these areas could be viewable during tours.
