Voltio Magazine cover

Voltio magazine Cover

I was asked by the organisers of the magazine to create the cover for the third and last issue. Voltio Magazine is a comic anthology sporting a number short stories from a wide array of authors who have in common a very personal voice and a work which is top/notch quality.

Creating a cover is always a challenge. In this case, not having a specified theme or an overall concept to tie together the magazine conceptually, even bigger. Total freedom is harder to deal with than constrains.

So, given that the only constant was change and variety and that the magazine body is created of multiple parts, I decided to go with a disassembled comic character which happens to be some kind of warlock because, you know, creating comics is for me some kind of witchcraft.

The cauldron, the pot where every kind of weird ingredients boil together to create a magical potion, a deadly poison or a love elixir is the perfect metaphor of the creative process. Therefore I made it the core, main body part of the character.

The text was also distributed in a scattered way to give it a hint of a Oui-Ja board fashion and some other witchcrafty (dead chicken, two headed cat...) elements where also created to be used in the magazine layout as design elements.

  Thanks for watching!
