Sarong Pattern Design

The aim of this project was to create a contemporary illustration print template for a traditional item: Singapore Sarong. We had to produce a contemporary illustration print by using digital and/or screen-printing for a wearable, commercial Singapore Sarong to represent Singapore. Our design key was to be influenced by the common cultures and traditions within Singapore's context and could however adopt aspirations from kitsch designs, "Miami-Vice", Mambo, surf, Hawaiian concept prints.

My sarong designs were deeply influenced by Peranakan architecture and batik print work. I made
my own marble paper using acrylic and oil paints, and then cut out areas of selected pieces that I thought were appealing. These are images of the process and the paper created:
Once I selected a certain square/rectangle piece of paper I scanned it and made repeat patterns
out of them on Adobe Photoshop using "define pattern".Each composition resembled an aspect of
Singapore and could be interpreted in several ways. The were loud and kitsch and formed elements that looked like Chinese lanterns, dragons, Peranakan architecture and tropical fruits.
