Halls of Horror: The Pontianak

PHOTOSHOOT:

Location: Golden Village Cinema, Great World City. Singapore.

Story line: The transformation of the Pontianak (female vampire) into a beautiful woman, when she goes out to catch her prey and then back into her terrifying self. She lives in the female bathroom of the cinema theatre and feeds on young girls. There is no dialogue but her feelings are brought through her facial expressions.

Model: Tamanna Purohit.
The short story given to me to illustrate for this project is called “Halls of Horror”. The short story comprised of a few supernatural incidences that occurred in Singapore cinema theatres over the years. After reading it about 10 times, I decided to narrow it down to the part where they talk about
a Pontianak (Malay word for female vampire) who inhabited the Women’s bathroom in Capitol
Cinema. Most of the short story is an interview, so I felt focusing on one relevant theme and illustrating it would be more specific.I felt that portraying my illustrations through photography-
my images would have a realistic look to at especially since the story is a myth and probably not
true but a belief that people have continued to pass on over the years. Conveying the story
though photographs would in other words be a contrast to reality.

A ''Pontianak'' is a female vampire, so the make up and costume was a very important factor for the photographs to have the intended impact. I asked one of my closest friends Tamanna Purohit to be
my muse for this project- she did a really great job!

I chose to convey my photography through the method of image transfer. Image transfer is a very easy
process- it is used to make exact copies of photographs onto other surfaces like paper and wood using thinner/acetone.  I felt that this method would give the book an eerie feel to it, since when the image is transferred the effect is grainy.

I made an accordion shaped book using thick cartridge paper and the cover and back were planks of wood. I re-wrote the story in my own words giving the basic gist of the myth, the font was handwritten.
