It was a relatively disappointing season for the Cougars in 2017, as the team finished with a win-loss record of 7-5 after recording at least eight wins in each of the past four seasons. After winning its opening game of the season against Arizona, the Cougars posted an impressive 38-3 win over Rice University, but followed that up with a 27-24 loss to Texas Tech. Houston won its next two games, but failed to maintain its momentum as it lost back-to-back games to the University of Tulsa and the University of Memphis.

Following the loss to Memphis, Houston recorded perhaps its biggest win of the season by defeating the No. 17-ranked University of South Florida by a score of 28-24. The team won two of its final three games and earned entry into the Hawaii Bowl, which it lost 33-27 to Fresno State. The Cougars now have a record of 4-11 in bowl games since 1981.
