ELEMENTAL EXIGENCY | Art Photography

Overview

Elemental Exigency was an environmental art exhibition at Small Green Door that explored the elemental repercussions of human habitation on Earth through photography, painting, sculpture, performance, poetry, and immersive installation.

In collaboration with curator Karl Leone Small Green Door hosted the show and featured work by twelve artists. One of these artists was Alexis Myre, a mixed-media sculpture artist. Her installation Philolaus Figures was absolutely stunning and inspired our photography team to create a series of images featuring the delicate pods.

This series is inspired by the artist's statement copied below. We added powder compound and a floating element to give the images a kinetic energy. The photographs stretch the constraint of two dimensions in order to translate the limitlessness of a seed.

"Mathematician and philosopher Philolaus argued that everything stems from limits and limitlessness working together in harmony. As we can see motion in a static drawing, it is possible to feel the energy of life from the dormant seed. This composition investigates the limits and limitlessness of the seemingly small, still and dormant. Natural and synthetic materials disappear into line and shape, similar to the progression of time in music drafted." -Alexis Myre
