Elaine Norman's profile

History of 105 Second Avenue

This address has had a long and colorful history in New York.  Commissioned by Emigrant Savings Bank, I created nine hand-colored gelatin-silver print collages using old photographs, advertisements, posters and other assorted materials and memorabilia acquired from public archives and individual collectors. The series begins with the building's 36-year run as the Loew's Commodore movie palace which opened in 1926, followed by the Yiddish Village Theatre, the legendary Fillmore East and, in the 1980's, a sate-of-the-art discotheque and gay nightclub known as The Saint.

The collages are on permanent display at 105 Second Avenue, New York City, now an Apple Bank branch..
