Built in 1922 as an ice rink, this cavernous space was transformed into the "Home of Refined Dancing" in 1956. In the early 1980's, I began participating in the Harvest Moon Ball, an annual amateur dance contest that officially began in 1935 and lasting till 1984. Preliminary dance contests were held around the city throughout the year, ocdasionally at Roseland Ballroom. I became somewhat of a regular there, practicing my routines and, since winning - Rumba Champion 1983 - for the sheer love of dancing. I was quite smitten with the place and the idea of partner dancing as the essence of a bygone elegance.
Ballroom dancing on a grand scale faded from the scene, and the space was used for concerts, special events and private parties. Roseland closed on April 7, 2014.
