Meat Industry Follows Fossil Fuels as Contributor

A business executive with more than two decades of experience, Darin Pastor is the CEO of Capstone Affluent Strategies in East Amherst, New York. Ready to buck the status quo in favor of long-term economic stability, Darin Pastor supports the establishment of emission-free agricultural manufacturing plants powered by renewable energy sources.

While most discussion around greenhouse gas emissions centers on the burning of fossil fuels, changing the way the agricultural industry operates is just as important. The agricultural industry stands out as the second-largest driver of carbon dioxide emissions, after fossil fuels.

In fact, meat and dairy products account for around 15 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions, with cattle contributing significantly to methane emissions. To move toward a more sustainable trajectory, environmentalists urge consumers to reduce their meat consumption through campaigns like “Meatless Mondays” and supporting an added tax on meat. Despite this planet-protecting advice, Americans increased their meat consumption 5 percent between 2014 and 2015.
