Dot Watch—The world’s first braille smartwatch

The world’s first braille smartwatch, the Dot Watch is an entry device that marks the start of braille innovation. Powered by Dot’s patented Active braille technology, the Dot Watch is comprised of moving braille cells that respond to touch. Pair the watch to a cellular device, and its users can tell time, date and receive notifications in real time. Given the luxuries of our Information Age, this may not seem like a big deal, but for the first time ever, deaf-blind and visually impaired individuals will be able to feel the seconds of time tick beneath their fingertips.

Our biggest challenge with the Dot Watch was to change the preconception of braille through, well, braille itself. Although braille is often perceived as a negative term within its community, it becomes a beautiful relief form from a designer’s perspective. An architectural system of dots embossed on a pure, white background, a sentence in braille appears as an intricate landscape.

Also, we are providing intuitive user experience with the affordance of unpacking the box for visually impaired people, having a beautiful, inclusive package design and a manual like a beautiful art book.

As we intended, the inherent beauty of braille is accentuated through its tactile watch face, the embossed braille text on the packaging, and the typographical layout of the user manual.
