Hipster Pets - Animal Symbols

Reflection:

For this project I had to design animal symbols using 6 different techniques and/or treatments and apply them to 3 distinct animals. The techniques were single line drawings, mosaic shapes, typographic, fabric/paper, geometric circles and scribbles. The 3 animals I chose for my symbols was a Koala, a Fox, and a Owl. The 3 animals also had to be connected in some way and for me I have always considered these hipster animals.

When I first started brainstorming for animals I wanted to choose animals that people would immediately know what they are. Animals that would be unique and easily identifiable. The owl has a distinct head and body, the fox has a distinct tail and the koala bear also has a distinct head and ears.

While drawing my preliminary sketches, I started to see what direction I would be going. I wanted to make clean and minimal images with minimal marks and lines and color. I wanted to show a start and a stop with my line drawing to show more of a single line type affect. When I was drawing my single line, scribble and my mosaic shapes, I wanted to keep them all black and white. I felt this black and white effect would keep things simple and clean. The typographic technique was the only one that I was kind of dreading. I am not very good at turning type into a graphic, so I kind of turned it around and made the graphic into type. For instance when I made the word fox, I put a tail, boots and ears on it to make it look like a fox. Lastly when I did the fabric/paper technique I chose to use carpet for the feathers of the owl, red burlap for the fur of the fox and the grey linen for the fur of the koala.

For me this project was a big help for expressing animals in different ways. It showed me that the overall tone of an image can change depending on how it is visually expressed. Even though these are the same animals, each one can be used for something completely different.
