The Barbican's Adventure Day

BA Graphics and Media Design.
Year 2, Project 3.

A group project consisting of four people, including myself.

Brief :

Create an activity which will help young children to begin to learn referencing within the Barbican library. Inform children that librarians have more to offer than helping them find books and helping them with computers.

The work for the production of the activity book was divided between the four members of the group; I created the copy for the activity book after researching how best to do so, and created the blueprint for the map. All work leading up to the production process was done by every member individually, then collated, scrutinized and put together as a group.

Below are some images of the contents of the activity book.
The children are required to complete a series of research tasks in the form of a treasure hunt. They must match the image on each page with the same image found on the map, giving them the area in the library in which to look. The contents page then tells them the name of the specific shelf area they need to search within the area marked on the map, and finally, the instructions (written in the form of rhyming poetry) tells them the title of the book and what to look for in the book in an entertaining and engaging manner.

This process teaches the children how to make use of the contents of a book, how to use the subcatagories in the shelving, and how to navigate a libaray with a purpose.
The librarians will give them a short introduction to The Adventure Day before they begin, informing them that should they need help in understanding something or searching for something, they can ask the librarian for help. The language is deliberately slightly challenging, so as to encourage the children to ask for help, thereby teaching them that the librarians are also a source of knowledge, and not just someone to help you find the books in the library. This particular aspect is an attempt to revive the traditional services of a librarian, who used to be seen as the scholars they are.
