Riverfront Times: Digital Editor

As digital editor for the Riverfront Times, I was the newspaper's online hub. I amplified our field journalists' live reports through social media, scoured networks for news tips, developed game plans for special-issue content and promotions, researched and assigned stories to our large freelance photographer pool and coached photographers on interviews and photo write-ups. I also used charm and magic (and good-old outreach common sense) to get national performers and loudmouths to share our items.

Slideshows played a huge role in securing pageviews during my tenure, so I optimized them for maximum eyeballs, constantly tinkering with headlines and copy for the best SEO and with lead photos to garner the most clicks on social (All of this was before our parent media company had fully embraced the "17 Things That Are Totally Weird" schtick that's popular today). I also wrote detailed introductions (Previous slideshows hadn't included much information) and connected items to related coverage where possible. I frequently leveraged our huge bank of available photos and illustrations to create new slideshows and blog posts that cost us nothing but earned us thousands of extra clicks (Examples: RFT's best covers, roundups of the year's best costumes, etc.).

After Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed teen Michael Brown in August 2014, my work as digital editor ramped up considerably. See my Ferguson coverage here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/53676933/Riverfront-Times-Ferguson-Coverage.

A few of my items are below. Note: Due to CMS changes, items do not appear as they did when originally published; formatting is different, some photo captions are gone and some links are broken.
