Challenge
• Design Incase’s second generation portable battery charger with an integrated Lightning Cable attached.
• The new product must convey pragmatic yet upgraded look, and it must pass strict Apple MFI requirements.
Create an aluminum housing and follow the CMF of MacBook Pro.
Contribution
• Managed product design, project timeline and product development. Day to day interaction with Engineers, Marketing, Costing, Packaging and PD Management. Competitor research, material research, sketching, prototyping, 3D CAD construction, 3D rendering, design proposals, CMF specification and sample reviews.
Achievement
• Created working prototypes with an overseas prototype maker and sent to Apple Store team for a design evaluation. Aluminum housing option was too costly for Incase, and it required high MOQ from the manufacturer. As an alternative solution, the housing was painted with subtle dark gray metallic paint and second coated with clear soft-touch finish.
• Successfully launched at global Apple stores, and the product brought $1+ million revenue to the company.
