MOCAK – Social Wi-Fi solution

RIOT’s task was to produce a comprehensive system thanks to which people visiting the museum would have access to free Wi-Fi on the premises.
Introduction

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków, MOCAK, is one of the most modern and interesting tourist attractions in the city of Kraków. It is a “must see” when visiting the city. The museum is located in the old halls of Schindler’s Factory, in the post-industrial Zabłocie district.

The museum was searching for an intelligent analytical-marketing tool capable of learning and understanding the behaviors of those visiting MOCAK offline, and at the same time improve the brand’s reach and further loyalize the clients. How to achieve all these goals at once? With a social Wi-Fi system.

Problem

The museum already provided Internet access for its visitors, however, the method of bringing it to people’s attention and providing access data was quite traditional: the visitors could either ask one of the employees or find the information in paper form within the facility. The museum owners wanted to digitize the process.
Solution

The system we produced is comprised of three components.

The first is a logging module which allows visitors to log into the Wi-Fi network with one click via Facebook, LinkedIn or Google. The system remembers its guests so that during subsequent visits the guest is automatically granted access to the network. During login, the user can also sign up for the MOCAK newsletter.

Secondly, after logging into the network, guests are directed to the home page which can be configured according to the museum’s needs using a content management system which we implemented in the administrator’s panel. The landing pages have been designed in accordance with Responsive Web Design methodology in order for them to be properly presented, regardless of whether the user has a smartphone, tablet or a laptop.

The third component is the administrator’s panel. This constitutes the core of the social Wi-Fi system and ensures that the museum has invaluable analytical-marketing capabilities. Aside from the function of managing the contents of home pages, the panel enables advanced analysis of traffic in the museum and sending of precisely targeted mailing campaigns to guests who have signed up for the newsletter.
Ubiquiti UniFi

A key element of the project was the integration of the software layer with an infrastructure of Ubiquiti UniFi access points, physically existing within the facility. It is these access points that precisely determine the user’s location and serve them with relevant data, for example, by logging in to the MOCAK Bookstore, the user will be informed of the Library’s publishing news – particularly about new collections.

The system has been coupled with marketing tools such as Google Analytics, Freshmail, and the most popular social networks.

Effects

After a few months working together, we were able to work out a win-win solution with the client: visitors get access to Wi-Fi and the museum gets a tool with which it can analyze their actions and reach them with a precisely targeted message
An additional advantage of implementing the social Wi-Fi system has been improving the MOCAK brand exposure on the Internet - largely as a result of integrating the system with social media (mainly Facebook and TripAdvisor).

Apart from building a social Wi-Fi platform, RIOT now also holds the website of the MOCAK brand as an ongoing service.
