La Jetée
La Jetée 'The Pier' is a 28 minute long, French science-fiction film produced by Chris Marker. It tells the tale of a post-nuclear war experiment in time travel made entirely from black and white still images.
This book is a reconstruction of the film, with the combination of image and text. The concept behind the alterations in image on the majority of pages expresses the emotion of the man in the story by using the images from the film in an unusual format.
In many instances throughout the film, the character gets a high level of anxiety; heard in the form of soft and heavy heartbeats. To portray this in the book; the spilt up segments in the film images are to give a voice to the character, showing his state of confusion and distress. The more segments there are the faster and more intense his heartbeat is. Whole black pages and blacked out segments indicate when the character travels in time.
Pages are coptic stitched showing an exposed spine.
