EIN TISCH IST EIN TISCH Book Concept & Illustration

"Ein Tisch ist ein Tisch" ("A table is a table") is a short story of German author Peter Bichsel. The story describes a lonely man who, driven by a state of boredom, starts to invent his own language by changing the meaning of single words to other words, for instance calling a table "chair" or a bed "picture".

At first he has fun inventing all those new words, but eventually it turns out against him, because he would have lost his ability to communicate with the rest of the world, which doesn't understand him anymore. Neither does he understand the others anymore.

Inspired by the absurdity of this short story, I have created a visual adaptation as illustrations in the style of an old fashioned schoolbook, including interactive elements such as turning wheels, sliders or foil, which play with assigning unfamiliar words to images we are familiar to, and thereby change the perspective on our language and symbolics.

This project has been realised during my studies of communication design at the Fachbereich Gestaltung at the Fachhochschule Darmstadt

Thank you, Peter Bichsel, for this wonderful story.
