ROCK SUGAR
477 MALVERN ROAD, SOUTH YARRA, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
In a heritage shopfront in South Yarra, in collaboration with Samantha Eades Design, this new contemporary Thai eatery has squeezed into a tiny retail fronted former residence. The high lining board ceilings are complimented by exposing the original brick walls and whitewashing them to lighten up the lengthy space.
Elbow to elbow eating is welcomed in the shared menu style of the restaurant, and the length of the bar is attributed to the quirky cocktails on the list. Timber tops to the bar, tables and highbar shelving contrast with the curved green ceramic tiles to the barfront, and the custom blue powdercoat colour to all the back of bar shelving and custom designed tubualr lights over the bar. The pink light cluster in the rear dining room create a sisterley area to the front bar, looked over by the waving neon cat at the rear door.
The flair of the menu is also reflected in the bright neon signage, paying homage to the Thai cuisine, and the funky playlists that give this small space so much character.
