OSLO SIER

Exhibition & Signage
Language Exhibition at Oslo City Museum,
Oslo says: City language

In this exhibition you can hear the sounds of Oslo's many languages and dialects, take part in a journey through historical linguistics, get insight into what it´s like to grow up as multilingual – or simply let yourself be inspired and reflect on how languages, dialects and different ways of speaking are connected to stereotypical beliefs about how you appear to others or how others view you.

Our goal for the exhibition was to provide the best user experience. By using light, sound and textual variety and dramaturgy, together with rich and tactile materials, we hope to set the audience in a mood that allows for learning, wonder and contemplation. We had early on a vision of «taming» a quite diverse and noisy exhibition area. We decided to use plywood consistently throughout the room to cultivate a homogeneous style. We combined plywood with large powerful color surfaces to create awareness and sense of activity.

It was important that the exhibition would reach out to different target groups. The exhibition can therefore be experienced on multiple levels, from simple visuals that appeal to the youngest visitors to in depth information for those with a more academic interest.
