The Wonders of Reading PSA
A Public Service Announcement for Entertainment Weekly

I was assigned the task of designing a magazine spread for a popular publication. I had just done a PSA in another class, but didn't get to chose the subject matter, and I dearly wanted to do a PSA for reading. Therefore when this opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance to do a PSA for reading. Because it was a popular publication, I chose Entertainment Weekly, I wanted to tailor make the campaign to their readers. I figured there was nearly a 100% chance that the readers had seen 'The Wizard of Oz' but wondered, had any of them read the book? So, using the banner of The American Library Association, I created a spread around the idea of reading to your kids, versus just having them watch a movie.

There is something much more magical about sharing a book with your child than just plopping them down in from of the tv, which is not a nanny. I also wanted to show that it's not just the movie world that is "real" but that the words on a page can come to life, with the original W.W. Denslow illustrations turning into real poppies and tornadoes. Also, the sleeping form of Dorothy makes one think of tucking their children up for the night and reading bedtime stories. The photography work, aside from the field of poppies and the tornado, are all my own... yes, I did the individual poppies, and I'll let you in on a secret, you can't find poppies in November, but silk will do!

I also wish to eventually continue this campaign with other books that are famous movies... perhaps 'Alice in Wonderland' or 'Peter Pan.'
