Album Design for Troy Tones A Cappella
Troy Tones is an acclaimed a cappella group based at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. Members have gone on to perform on "The Sing-Off," on the Oprah Winfrey Network, and in the “Pitch Perfect” movie franchise. Their album cover had to convey a polished professionalism, while also encapsulating the energetic personality they're known for.
On the album cover, the title TT emerges and recedes as circles pass through it, as though it were forming ephemerally from sound waves. The design is graphic and sparse to reflect the music within—the production of the vocals is clean and pushes the human voice to sound almost synthetic, so the flat, graphic aesthetic sets an appropriate tone for the musical style and repertoire.
Just as music often needs a quiet pause before a high point, the two partial circles on the transition panel provide a moment of calm before the final reveal.
We produced the CD package using Discmakers, so I wasn't able to press check the project as I normally would. Because of this, I chose pure cyan to provide a pop of color, and to create a sense of fun while still ensuring perfect color on press.
