Architecture Icons for Vitra Campus

Vitra is one of the world leaders in high quality design furniture. Superdot was invited to make a study on the existing Campus Visitor Map and explore options to improve it. The current map is not perfectly suitable for the ever-growing campus because it is depicting a bird's eye view – buildings cannot be represented showing their iconic features and stand alone as equal components of the Campus. To find modality and iconicity of the buildings was the primary task for Superdot.

The Vitra production site in Weil am Rhein is a well-known Campus with buildings and objects by leading international architects. Therefore it was a great challenge to capture and bring iconic characteristics of the architectural masterpieces to a simplified form of an icon.

After several Campus visits, workshops with the Vitra team and additional research we have decided on a systematic approach. We have focused on the representational facades and developed a language for icons, which underlines dominant architectural elements, scale and uniqueness of each building. The aim was to find a solution that unifies the level of detail for different objects and also works in various sizes and applications.

The concept was not realised.
