School assignment: Redesign a magazine masthead, front cover, contents and feature article spreads.
The article discusses the importance of empathy when writing creative nonfiction, especially about family members, in order to convey the most accurate description of their lives. The use of the rectangles alludes to photographs, referenced multiple times in the article. The contrast between line-based and solid illustrations suggests the difference between real life and memory; one can try to relate what really happened, but inevitably some detail is lost in translation, and we are left to fill in the blank spaces with our imagination.
 
The illustrations were drawn with tinted charcoal, then scanned, Photoshopped and inserted into InDesign. The rest of the layout was completed digitally in InDesign.
